This post is a feeble attempt at showing the process that I went through to create a specific page in the kid's book. The process of creating (art, music, literature, etc.) is something that I've been fascinated by since the legendary Illustrator Murray Tinkelman really hammered into my head the idea that the process is just as important as the end product. The process of creating this page was actually pretty easy since my original idea, as seen in the rough sketch, was accepted by the author immediately and never had to go through several stages of revision. The text called for the main character to be seen expressing a desire for a pet/friend of his own.
So take a look and let me know what you think. The first image is the original rough sketch. The second is of the fully penciled page. The third is of the page completely inked and ready for scanning. And the last is the final full-color illustration. All artwork is © John A. Walsh

I have a deep respect for the artistic process that goes into illustration. I made an effort at illustrating my own children's picture book twenty years ago, and it took weeks to come up with two watercolor renditions. That hardly counts for gainful employment, huh?
Hi John, That's very interesting to see the progression. Nice work! I think I'll pass it on to Mary, her kids are very artistic and would probably enjoy seeing what you do.
